Serhii Kyslytsia, First Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, said economic sanctions will not halt Russia's economic activity. As Ukrinform reports, he sees the unity of the Ukrainian people as the most important factor influencing Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin.

In an interview with Ukrinform, Kyslytsia stressed that while sanctions are making life increasingly uncomfortable for Russians, they do not end economic activity within Russia. “It sounds very pathetic, but the biggest factor influencing Putin is the unity of the Ukrainian people,” he said.

He was responding to President Volodymyr Zelenskyi’s statement that Washington and Beijing could force Russia to make peace. Kyslytsia pointed out that Russia can continue the war for a long time despite heavy losses and economic problems. He referred to countries that buy more than half of Russia’s oil and to states that help circumvent sanctions.

Russia’s strategy for autumn and winter aims to split Ukrainian society, Kyslytsia said. He stressed that Putin is not inventing anything new – the destruction of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has recently occurred in similar form in Europe. Putin does not want negotiations because he believes Ukrainians will not survive the winter, Kyslytsia added.
