The Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine is now relying on emergency diesel generators after losing its last external power line. The Moscow-installed administration said staff are monitoring the operating parameters of the facilities and taking all necessary measures to maintain the safe operation of the units. Radiation levels are reported as normal.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on X that an attempt to manually restore the line had failed. Due to ongoing military activity, technicians are currently unable to determine the cause of the outage. According to an initial assessment, the damage is located on the northern bank of the Dnipro River.

The plant, with six reactors, is the largest in Europe. It does not generate electricity itself but requires power from two external connections to cool the nuclear fuel. Russia occupied the plant in the first weeks of the war that began in 2022. Since then, Moscow and Kyiv have regularly accused each other of military actions that endanger nuclear safety.
