Lars Joachim Rose, publisher of the Klambt media group, has been elected as the new chairman of the Media Association of the Free Press (MVFP). The regular election was unanimous, the association announced. In addition, Alfons Schräder (Heise) was elected as board member and treasurer, along with Thomas Hass (“Spiegel”), Holger Knapp (Sternefeld Medien), Detlef Koenig (mhp Verlag), Elisabeth Varn (Burda Verlag), and Frank Zeithammer (Evangelische Gemeindepresse Stuttgart) as board members. Their term lasts four fiscal years.

In the association’s statement, Rose said that free markets are not functioning freely but are dominated by a few technology giants. “When these platforms decide on visibility, reach, and refinancing of journalistic content – and when artificial intelligence uses this content without fair regulation and compensation – then this permanently affects our still intact economic foundation.” No publisher can solve these issues alone, Rose emphasized. That makes unity within the MVFP and even closer cooperation with other associations all the more important.

Rose succeeds Philipp Welte, who did not stand for re-election after a four-year term. Welte was on the board of the Munich-based media group Burda until the end of 2025. The 64-year-old journalist is considered one of the thought leaders of the European media industry. The MVFP is the largest magazine publishers’ association in Europe, representing around 350 publishers.
