Education Minister Julia Willie Hamburg (Greens) called the decision a “new chapter for our linguistic diversity.” The Oberschule in Uplengen now offers Low German as a second foreign language – alongside English and, optionally, French or Latin.
The classes aim to strengthen regional language culture and inspire students to take an interest in Low German. The ministry emphasizes that the school will be provided with the necessary teachers and materials. A curriculum for the subject has already been developed.
