Magnitude 5.1 earthquake shakes Peloponnese – no damage reported

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck southwestern Greece's Peloponnese peninsula on Sunday evening. According to the Geodynamic Institute of the University of Athens, no damage was reported.

The quake occurred at 8:17 p.m. CEST (9:17 p.m. local time), the Geodynamic Institute of the University of Athens said. The epicenter was located 16 kilometers southwest of the city of Pyrgos on the peninsula, according to the institute.

A fire department spokesman, Colonel Ioannis Artopoios, told state broadcaster ERT that there were no reports of injuries or building damage. Residents of the region felt the tremor clearly, but the situation remained calm.

Authorities nevertheless urged caution, warning that aftershocks could not be ruled out. The Peloponnese region is considered seismically active.
