After a days-long major fire in a storage hall in Neumünster, the Kiel public prosecutor's office has initiated criminal proceedings against the tenant for negligent arson, as reported by NDR.

Police assume that fire-hazardous items were stored in the hall, including batteries from a company. The exact cause of the fire remains unclear due to the extensive destruction, according to police spokesperson Mira Grunicke. The fire broke out on June 30 in the storage hall complex, and extinguishing work lasted three days.

There had already been multiple fires in other storage facilities of the same company, including a hall in the Gadeland district. Authorities have now taken measures to identify other halls rented by the tenant and prevent further fires. The tenant is responsible for the cleanup work, and investigations are ongoing.

The Neumünster fire department describes it as the largest fire in the city in 30 years. At its peak, 300 emergency personnel were on site, including many volunteers. One person was injured by inhaling toxic gases. Asbestos measurements outside the fire site were negative, the city announced.
