Massive drone attack on Moscow: Oil refinery on fire, airports closed

Moscow and the surrounding region were hit by a massive drone attack on Thursday morning, which Ukrainian media describe as one of the largest since the start of the war. According to the BBC, citing Russian authorities, the Kapotnya refinery is in flames and several airports have been closed.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 180 drones heading toward the capital had been intercepted by morning, but acknowledged that some had broken through and hit the refinery. Videos circulating on social media show impacts and large plumes of smoke.

President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as a “completely justified response” to Russian strikes on Ukraine. “If Ukraine burns, Moscow will burn too,” he said. In addition to the capital, targets in the Rostov and Belgorod regions were also attacked, where a fuel depot caught fire.
