The French national team celebrated a clear 3-0 victory against Iraq in their second Group I match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Kylian Mbappé scored twice, continuing his pursuit of Lionel Messi’s World Cup goal record. Real Madrid striker opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a long-range shot and added a second goal after the break.

The match in Philadelphia was interrupted for two hours due to a thunderstorm. After the restart, France remained dominant. Ousmane Dembélé scored the third goal late in the game, assisted by Michael Olise. Iraq, who had already lost their opening group match against Norway, remained largely toothless.

Mbappé now sits two goals behind Messi, who scored a brace against Austria shortly before France’s kickoff, bringing his World Cup tally to 18 goals. France, with two wins, has already secured a spot in the round of 16.
