To secure a nursery or kindergarten place for September 2027, Munich parents must register by 3 March. The city also plans new, income-based fees.

Families who want a nursery, kindergarten or after-school place in Munich for September 2027 have until 3 March 2027 to register in the city’s first allocation round. Registering later is not fatal, but the odds of getting your preferred place shrink. At the same time, the city plans to reshuffle fees for exactly that intake.

Three dates to note

By 3 March 2027: deadline to register on the city’s kita finder+ for the 2027/2028 year. Registration is free, online or directly at the nursery. You can sign up with several providers; each puts your child on its waiting list. One can be marked as “preferred”, but that gives no right to that place. Not every independent provider is listed on kita finder+, so ask directly if yours is missing.

From 4 March 2027: the city starts allocating places and sends offers to your kita finder+ account. If you do not accept within ten days, the place lapses. Regular start date is 1 September.

1 September 2027: on the city’s current planning, new fees take effect then too. Nothing is final: parents’ councils are consulted in autumn 2026, and the city council is expected to decide around the year-end.

What the new fees would mean

For municipal nurseries and parent-run initiatives (EKI-Plus), the city lists monthly fees for the longest booking (over nine hours in nursery and kindergarten, over six in after-school care): €330 for the nursery (Krippe), €174 for kindergarten and €166 for after-school care. For comparison it cites nursery fees (over nine hours) in other Bavarian cities: Würzburg €332, Augsburg €342, Regensburg €370, Ingolstadt €400, Nuremberg €464, Erlangen €471. Under the new model Munich would sit at the cheaper end.

For many families the income scale matters more: with household income up to €50,000 a year, municipal nurseries charge nothing; between €50,000 and €80,000 there is an income-based reduction. Holders of the Münchenpass and people on social benefits keep full fee waivers, and help through the Wirtschaftliche Jugendhilfe remains; for non-municipal providers the Sozialbürgerhaus is the contact. The sibling discount stays. How large the reduction is between €50,000 and €80,000 is not stated in the sources yet.

Two items are easy to miss. Meal money in municipal nurseries is set to rise by €2 a day, from €105 to €140 a month. And in 2028/29 and 2029/30 fees are due to rise by an average of four per cent each year. Deputy mayor Verena Dietl said: “This decision hurts many people, me included.” The city cites its strained budget.

Our assessment, with the caution a draft deserves: do not make registration wait for the fee debate. The March deadline applies regardless, and a place can still be declined later. If your income is just above €50,000, recalculate once the council has voted.

Your entitlement and paperwork

Children have a legal claim to early childcare from their first birthday and to a kindergarten place from age three until school (section 24 of Book VIII of the Social Code). According to asyl.net the claim covers children whose lawful centre of life is in Germany, including refugee children; the hours depend on parents’ circumstances, such as work or training. The source does not address Ukrainians with protection status specifically; we assume lawful residence under section 24 of the Residence Act counts, but if in doubt, ask the city’s parent advice service.

From age one the city requires proof of measles vaccination (at least one dose), from age two full protection with two doses. Proof is a vaccination record or a doctor’s certificate; whether a Ukrainian vaccination record is accepted without translation is best checked with the Kita in advance. Contact: Referat für Bildung und Sport, KITA department, kita.rbs@muenchen.de, tel. +49 89 233-96775; phone appointments can be booked on the city website. If you need a place mid-year you can apply for vacancies at any time, and the registration stays valid for five more months.
