Munich Mayor Krause Demands Company Housing from Large Corporations

Munich's mayor Dominik Krause (Greens) calls on international corporations to contribute to housing construction, particularly through company-owned apartments. The city is facing a severe housing shortage.

Krause told the “Augsburger Allgemeine” that the city’s international character is an asset. The strongest economic growth is currently in the IT sector, he said. Companies that settle in the region have a responsibility, which many already fulfill in areas like urban design. “But I also see them as obligated to build company housing,” the Green politician added.

Munich currently lacks several thousand apartments, and rents are extremely high in some areas. Critics see the influx of high earners as an additional burden on the already tight market. Google recently announced it would expand its presence in Munich.

Bavaria’s Construction Minister Christian Bernreiter (CSU) supports Krause’s initiative. Creating housing is a joint effort of private, state, and municipal measures, Bernreiter said. If companies create housing to become more attractive in the competition for skilled workers, that is only to be welcomed.
