The Munich S-Bahn has put a new training center into operation in Steinhausen. According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the space for training new train drivers in the old premises was no longer sufficient. The center is intended to meet the rising demand for locomotive engineers.
Training takes place using modern simulators and virtual reality technology. This allows aspiring train drivers to practice realistic driving situations without being on real tracks. Model trains also play an important role in the training: trainees learn the basics of signaling and route management on them.
Deutsche Bahn (DB) is desperately seeking new recruits for its driving service nationwide. In Munich and the surrounding area alone, numerous positions remain unfilled. With the new center, the Munich S-Bahn aims to significantly increase training capacity and shorten waiting times for applicants.
The training center in Steinhausen is part of a larger DB initiative to combat the skilled labor shortage in rail transport. In addition to technical equipment, the company relies on practical teaching methods and close mentoring of trainees. The first courses have already started.
