Latvia’s Edgars Rinkēvičs has called on NATO to prepare for worst-case scenarios. Russia remains dangerous and unpredictable despite diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine, he said in an interview with Polish broadcaster World.

A Russian incursion into the Baltic states would, in his words, be a direct attack on NATO and the European Union. This would automatically draw in allies such as Poland, Germany and the United Kingdom, Rinkēvičs said.

The warning comes against the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine. The Baltic states, which themselves border Russia, have long called for a stronger NATO presence in the region.
