According to ‘The Economist’, doubts about the reliability of transatlantic security guarantees are growing within NATO. The magazine cites internal voices calling for an urgent ‘Plan B’ scenario – in case the US leaves the alliance or drastically reduces its military involvement. However, the current leadership under Secretary General Mark Rütte avoids any public or internal debate on this scenario.
The article’s authors accuse Rütte of ‘fatal stubbornness’ and ‘resistance to common sense’. He ignores repeated statements by Donald Trump about a possible realignment of the US role in NATO as well as the already begun reduction of American troops in Europe. Instead, Rütte insists that the US remains a reliable partner and security guarantor – and has banned any discussion of a ‘Plan B’ at NATO headquarters.
The magazine speculates that Rütte wants to avoid a confrontation with Trump by avoiding harsh statements and not provoking him into radical steps. However, the growing skepticism about the stability of transatlantic ties is thus being ignored.
