Left-wing politician Zohran Mamdani took office in January with a promise to make life more affordable in the 8.5-million-person metropolis. Now he is delivering on a key part of his agenda: rents for roughly one million rent-regulated apartments in New York will be frozen.

Under the decision by the Rent Guidelines Board, landlords of affected apartments may not raise rents when leases are renewed starting in October. “This is a historic victory for the tenants of New York City,” Mamdani said.

The 34-year-old Mamdani belongs to the left wing of the Democratic Party and describes himself as a “democratic socialist.” He is the youngest and first Muslim mayor of New York.
