Last year, 11 percent of internet users in Germany experienced cybercrime, as shown by the Cybersecurity Monitor from the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). The most common offenses include phishing, fraud, and unauthorized access to personal data. These developments highlight the growing threat in the digital space.

One-third of those affected suffered financial losses, while 29 percent reported a loss of trust in online services. According to the BSI, consumer complacency is alarming: more than half of the respondents (55 percent) assess their risk of becoming a victim of cybercrime as low or nonexistent.

The study also shows that only 14 percent of users regularly seek information about cybersecurity. Many actively look for solutions only when problems arise. Of 19 proposed protective measures, only strong passwords and antivirus programs are well-known, used by 46 and 40 percent of respondents, respectively.

The reasons for inadequate security are varied. Twenty-seven percent of respondents feel subjectively safe, while 23 percent find the measures complicated and overwhelming. These findings underscore the urgent need for education and prevention in the area of cybercrime.
