For many smartphone users in Germany, paying at the checkout is about to get more complicated. PayPal is ending its integration with Google Wallet, compelling customers to make a switch starting late March.

The direct link between PayPal accounts and Google Wallet will be severed. Instead, users will need to rely on PayPal's own NFC payment function moving forward. This change affects everyone who has been conveniently using Google Wallet to make payments with their PayPal balance.

This move signals a strategic shift for the payment service provider. PayPal is increasingly focusing on its own technologies and reducing reliance on third-party platforms. "Users should switch to PayPal's own NFC payment," a company spokesperson confirmed to industry media.

For consumers, this initially means more effort. They'll need to reconfigure the PayPal app and possibly adjust their payment habits. The transition is scheduled for March 31st. After that date, PayPal payments will only work through the provider's original app.

This decision comes during a period of heightened uncertainty in Germany's payment landscape. Just recently, online retailer Otto temporarily suspended PayPal payments—a reaction to technical issues with the American service provider. Such incidents fuel unease among both merchants and consumers.

While PayPal promises a smooth transition to its own solution, many users wonder why a proven integration is being abandoned. The answer likely lies in competition: With its own NFC function, PayPal maintains full control over the customer experience—and the associated data.

What does this mean in practice? Those who wish to continue making contactless payments with PayPal must install the provider's app and enable it for NFC payments. The alternative would be to switch to other services integrated into Google Wallet, such as credit cards or banking apps.

This transition highlights how dynamic the digital payments market remains. Service providers continuously adapt their strategies—sometimes at the expense of convenience for end users. For PayPal customers in Germany, it's now time to update the app and adjust their habits.
