The German Publishers and Booksellers Association honors the lawyer for his literary and human rights commitment. Sands advocates “for justice, peace, and the persistent defense of international law,” said Sebastian Guggolz, chairman of the association. The descendant of Holocaust survivors connects personal life stories with the big questions of international law.
Sands works as a human rights lawyer at the International Court of Justice in The Hague and is a professor of international law at University College London. His literary works such as “Rückkehr nach Lemberg” (2018) are based on cases he handled as a lawyer and address, among other things, the persecution of Jewish people during the German occupation. The board of trustees praised his “narrative brilliance” and “historical depth.”
The award ceremony traditionally takes place on the last day of the Frankfurt Book Fair at St. Paul’s Church. The peace prize is endowed with 25,000 euros and has been awarded since 1950 to individuals who have contributed to the realization of the idea of peace. Last year, historian Karl Schlögel received the award.
