Two-thirds of Americans believe Donald Trump is prioritizing his controversial immigration policy at the expense of their economic well-being, a new Guardian poll shows.

The poll was conducted against a backdrop of growing discontent over the economic costs of the US war against Iran. 68 percent of respondents said Trump is too preoccupied with mass deportations and pays too little attention to affordability issues.

President Trump said just days ago, in connection with peace talks with Iran: “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation.” The statement drew widespread criticism and likely influenced the poll results.

The economic fallout from the Iran war is straining many US households. The poll shows that the administration’s prioritization – tougher immigration controls over measures to combat rising living costs – is increasingly rejected by voters.
