Portugal before World Cup match: Coach Martínez silent on Ronaldo’s role

Ahead of Portugal's second World Cup group game against Uzbekistan, national coach Roberto Martínez is keeping quiet about whether Cristiano Ronaldo will start. The 41-year-old superstar faced criticism after a poor performance in the opening match.

Martínez dodged the question of a starting spot for Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the match against Uzbekistan today (7:00 p.m. local time / ARD and Magenta TV) in Houston. “I can’t inform about the starting eleven yet because I haven’t informed my players yet,” Martínez said. He did not want to speak publicly about something that had not yet been discussed with the players.

Portugal started the World Cup with a disappointing 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo. Ronaldo, the multiple world footballer, seemed out of place in the attack and faced criticism after the match. Martínez admitted that the team had conducted an honest self-assessment: “We recognized where we made mistakes, what we couldn’t achieve, and what we need to change.”

Portugal sits third in Group K with one point, with Colombia leading the table. The Seleção will play their final group game against Colombia on the night leading into Sunday.
