Police found the siblings on Wednesday between the town of Alcácer do Sal and the resort of Comporta. The children were first taken to a police station and then to a care facility, police spokesman João Gaspar told Stern.
After a hospital examination on Wednesday morning, authorities handed the children over to the French embassy. “They are safe,” Gaspar assured. Since no missing person report had been filed, Portuguese media speculate that the parents abandoned the children.
The French embassy in Portugal initially declined to comment when asked. Investigations into the children’s origin and the circumstances of their discovery are ongoing.
