The number of naturalizations in Germany reached an all-time high in 2025. According to a report by Spiegel, more than 309,000 people received a German passport, more than in any previous year.
The report cites the reform of the nationality law, which came into force last year, as a key reason for the record figure. Among other things, it facilitates dual citizenship and shortens the required period of residence for naturalization.
The exact breakdown by country of origin or federal state was not provided in the report. The federal government had passed the reform with the aim of promoting integration and making it easier for skilled workers to move to Germany.
