Former Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira is reportedly on the verge of returning to the club as an assistant coach under José Mourinho. According to the Sport-Informations-Dienst, the move is finalized, as previously reported by the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Khedira will join the coaching team of his former manager, who is set to take over Real Madrid for the second time next season.
Khedira played for Real Madrid from 2010 to 2015, making 102 appearances. The 39-year-old knows the demands of the coach from his own experience. He is expected to start his work in the Spanish capital as early as next week.
With Real Madrid, Khedira won the Champions League under Carlo Ancelotti in 2014, a league title in 2012, and the Copa del Rey twice, in 2011 and 2014. After stints at Juventus and Hertha BSC, Khedira ended his playing career in 2021.
This will be Khedira’s first foray into coaching. After retiring, he pursued a coaching license and most recently worked as a TV pundit for streaming service Dazn. He is likely to step away from that role once he begins his new position at Real Madrid.
