A man opened fire on Secret Service officers at a checkpoint near the White House, according to Tagesschau. The officers returned fire and hit the suspect, who later died in hospital. A bystander was shot in the incident; the Secret Service gave no update on his condition.

US media report that the attacker is a 21-year-old man from Maryland who had a history of mental health issues and had repeatedly clashed with the Secret Service. A motive is not yet known. Witnesses reported around 20 to “dozens” of shots.

US Donald Trump was in the White House at the time of the shooting and was unharmed. Secret Service communications chief Anthony Guglielmi said Trump was not affected by the incident. Trump had previously announced he would spend the holiday weekend in Washington working on an agreement to end the Iran war.

EuroPulse reported on May 23, 2026, on Trump’s statement about the Iran deal, saying the decision on an agreement was 50-50 and would be made by Sunday (link to article).
