The demonstrators gathered on Sunday in the center of the Spanish capital. Many carried Spanish flags and signs with slogans such as “Resignation of the socialist mafia.” The protests are directed against the left-wing government of Pedro Sánchez, which faces corruption allegations.
The allegations concern, among other things, the financing of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) and possible irregularities in Sánchez’s circle. The prime minister himself has rejected the accusations and speaks of a campaign by the political right. The opposition is calling for a parliamentary investigation.
The demonstration in Madrid is the largest so far in a series of protests against Sánchez. In recent weeks, thousands of people had already demonstrated against the government in several Spanish cities. The corruption affair is putting pressure on Sánchez’s minority government, which relies on the support of several regional parties.
Whether the protests will have political consequences remains to be seen. Sánchez has not yet announced new elections. The next regular election in Spain is not scheduled until 2027.
