The incident occurred on Thursday at around 1:34 p.m. local time at Johnsons of Old Hurst in Cambridgeshire. According to police, the boy was attacked by at least one crocodile after falling into the enclosure. Zoo staff pulled the child from the pool; he is in critical but stable condition at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

Cambridgeshire Police arrested a 30-year-old white British man from Norfolk. He is suspected of pushing the boy. Police said he did not know the child, suffers from intellectual disabilities, and was at the zoo with two caregivers. The man was released on bail because he is “not fit for interview.”

Zoo director Andy Johnson told the BBC that his wife Tracy jumped into the enclosure to rescue the boy. She was unharmed. Family friend and reptile expert Chris Newman praised her courage: “She took an enormous risk.” The crocodile house has been closed for now. Police are investigating how long the child was in the water.
