The top orchestra played to a sold-out Waldbühne with around 22,000 seats. Because of the summer heat, the dress code had been relaxed: the musicians performed without jackets, and the women wore short-sleeved tops. Chief conductor Kirill Petrenko conducted works by Ottorino Respighi and Giuseppe Verdi.
During the evening, lightning was visible in the sky. The intermission was shortened, and the encore “Berliner Luft” by Paul Lincke was almost canceled – the orchestra played it after all, while the audience was already supposed to leave the arena. The concert was also broadcast on television and radio.
