The accident happened on Friday evening near Bedford, close to Cambridge. A passenger train from Corby crashed into the rear of another train that had stopped on the same track. The impact derailed one carriage.
According to the ambulance service, 11 people suffered very serious injuries, 22 serious, and 56 minor injuries. More than 20 emergency medical teams and six air ambulances were deployed. The transport minister announced a thorough investigation into the crash.
King Charles III expressed his condolences to the victims and the family of the killed train driver through a Buckingham Palace spokesperson.
