A disruption of the digital railway radio system GSM-R brought all long-distance and regional services as well as S-Bahn trains in Germany to a halt late Tuesday evening. Trains had to stop, and many S-Bahn and freight trains stood still. Deutsche Bahn (DB) said it resolved the disruption within a short time.

“We were able to stabilize the situation with an emergency system,” DB CEO Evelyn Palla told the Bild newspaper. The cause of the problem now needs to be clarified, she added. A DB spokesperson confirmed that services are gradually resuming.

Despite the all-clear, the railway warned of ongoing disruptions. Passengers must expect delays and isolated cancellations.

The Metronom railway company was also affected. The company informed its passengers about the disruption late Tuesday evening. The Association of Private Freight Railways called for a thorough investigation of the disruption. Association managing director Peter Westenberger told dpa that the cause should not be determined solely through a self-disclosure by DB InfraGo.
