Leonardo Bittencourt has moved on a free transfer from Werder Bremen to Energie Cottbus. The promoted side to the 2. Bundesliga announced the signing of the 32-year-old. Bittencourt signed a contract that also includes a perspective after his active career: he is to remain with the club in a leading role later on.

Coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz, who is in his third stint at Cottbus, was emotional. He had once promoted Bittencourt to the professional squad against resistance. “His path afterwards says it all,” Wollitz said. The midfielder made his debut under Wollitz in the 2. Bundesliga in 2011 and moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2012. Later he played for Hannover 96, 1. FC Cologne, Hoffenheim and most recently Bremen, where his contract was not extended. In 304 Bundesliga matches he scored 32 goals.

His father Franklin is a club legend in Cottbus. The return of the “prodigal son” is considered a coup for the promoted side.
