Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has drawn the ire of many compatriots with his decision to travel to Los Angeles on Friday. Instead of supporting the Canadian national team in Toronto against Bosnia-Herzegovina (1-1), he attended the USA vs. Paraguay match (4-1) at Stadium – alongside his partner, pop star Katy Perry, who had an opening performance there.
Trudeau faced sharp criticism on social media. An X user from Toronto called the decision ‘a slap in the face of this country. Tasteless is still putting it mildly.’ Others labeled him a ‘traitor’ and a ‘fraud.’ There were also more lenient voices pointing out that Trudeau was traveling as a private individual.
Early Sunday morning, Trudeau justified himself on X: ‘Sometimes the duties of a supportive friend call. But you know who I’m rooting for the trophy,’ he wrote, adding a Canadian flag emoji. Cameras had shown Perry and Trudeau drinking beer and kissing in the stands.
