US Donald Trump announced on Thursday via his Truth Social platform the deployment of 5,000 additional US soldiers to Poland. Trump justified the decision by citing his close relationship with Poland’s newly elected Karol Nawrocki, whom he had supported during the election campaign. The announcement contradicts recent Pentagon statements.

Just on Tuesday, the US Department of Defense announced it would reduce the number of combat brigades in Europe from four to three. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said the reduction was part of a comprehensive process advancing Trump’s “America First” agenda and encouraging NATO allies to take more responsibility for their own defense. Vice President JD Vance also spoke earlier this week of a delay in troop deployment to Poland.

Poland’s Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz had previously denied that the reduction of US troops in Europe would affect Poland. His deputy Cezary Tomczyk added that any redeployment would affect Germany, not Poland. Poland is continuously working to strengthen the US troop presence.

EuroPulse reported on May 20, 2026, on Trump’s track record of election endorsements, which included Nawrocki’s victory: Trump: 100 percent of his endorsements victorious – Massie ousted in Kentucky.
