Donald Trump has appointed Bill Pulte as acting director of national intelligence (DNI). Pulte, who previously led the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), succeeds Tulsi Gabbard, who resigned a few days ago. Trump announced the appointment on his Truth Social platform.
Pulte is the heir to a home construction company fortune and, during his tenure at the FHFA, repeatedly leveled serious accusations against Trump’s political opponents. Among other things, he accused Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook of mortgage fraud. Cook denied the allegations. Trump himself praised Pulte: “William has extensive experience dealing with America’s most sensitive matters.”
Pulte is expected to remain head of the FHFA concurrently. Gabbard’s tenure was marked by tensions; she was largely sidelined while Trump launched attacks on Venezuela and Iran. As early as April, Trump had asked cabinet members whether he should replace Gabbard, according to two people familiar with the discussions.
