Trump cancels signing ceremony after Senate rebuke on Iran war

US Donald Trump has canceled a planned ceremony for a housing bill and clashed with several senators after the Senate passed a rare resolution calling on him to end the war with Iran.

The dispute escalated after the Senate on Tuesday passed a so-called war powers resolution by 50 to 48 votes. The symbolic resolution calls on Trump to withdraw US forces from hostilities with Iran. Four Republicans joined Democrats in backing the measure, which had already passed the House of Representatives.

Trump reacted swiftly: He canceled a ceremony scheduled for Wednesday to sign a housing bill. On his Truth Social platform, he wrote that the event would be scrapped “until we pass the urgently needed Save America Act.” The legislative package includes requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration and a photo ID for casting ballots – Democrats criticize it as an attack on voting rights.

Republican Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who is not seeking reelection, reported a clash with Trump behind closed doors. “I said: You haven’t told the American people what’s going on. It was supposed to take four weeks; it’s taking four months,” Cassidy told reporters. After Trump’s angry outburst, the Senate rejected another similar motion by 50 to 47 votes, but that does not invalidate the previous resolution.
