The state visit of US Donald Trump to China will take place at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. According to a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Trump is expected in Beijing from May 13 to 15. Central to the discussions will be the trade conflict between the US and China, as well as the war between Israel and Iran.

Trump is expected to urge Beijing to leverage its influence over Tehran to reach an agreement between Iran and the US. In the past, Trump has described his relationship with Xi as close and constructive, emphasizing that both leaders recognize the importance of this relationship.

Despite the positive tones, significant differences remain between Washington and Beijing. Points of contention include tariffs, China's close economic ties to Iran, and the Taiwan issue, which China considers part of its territory.

White House Deputy Press Anna Kelly described the upcoming visit as having enormous symbolic significance. However, she emphasized that Trump is not traveling solely for symbolic reasons but also aims to finalize concrete deals in the interest of the US.

The visit was originally planned for late March or early April but was postponed due to the Iran war.
