On the eve of Independence Day, US Donald Trump delivered a speech before Mount Rushmore, invoking a nation of believers and warning against communist ideology.

Trump spoke on Friday in the state of South Dakota before supporters, painting a picture of the US as a nation that relies on God. “Our rights” were granted by God, “who created us,” the Republican said. At the same time, he warned: “You can be a communist or a patriot.” Trump has increasingly used the term communism recently to also attack left-wing domestic opponents.

He emphasized that no other country has brought more good to the world than the US. He highlighted that people in the US speak English because it is the language of the Founding Fathers – without mentioning that many Americans also speak Spanish. Mount Rushmore is world-famous for the carved heads of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln into the rock.

It was not the first time Trump used the backdrop of the national monument. Six years ago, he also rallied there on Independence Day against a protest movement against racism. The highlight of the celebrations is today, Saturday: In the evening, a large fireworks display is planned in Washington, accompanied by fighter jet flyovers. However, the festive mood is dampened by extreme heat around 40 degrees Celsius – a large parade in the morning has already been canceled.

Trump is under massive domestic political pressure, among other things due to the Iran war and sinking approval ratings. He is using the celebrations to highlight the successes of his second term. His appearance in the evening is scheduled for 9:45 p.m. local time – he announced he would give “a really long speech” to show that he can achieve everything.
