US Donald Trump said on Thursday at the White House that an agreement with Iran is close. If Tehran agrees, the US government will abandon plans to seize the strategically important Kharg Island, Trump said. The island is Iran’s main oil export hub and had been at the center of US pressure tactics.
“That would be the case. If we sign this agreement,” Trump replied when asked whether the plan to take the island was now off the table. Earlier in the day, he had described seizing Kharg as the preferred option, arguing that the US could thus take control of Iran’s oil and gas markets.
Meanwhile, an incident occurred in the Strait of Hormuz: according to a senior US defense official, Iran fired drones at merchant ships. “It appears that Iran attempted to attack merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz,” the official said. US forces shot down two Iranian attack drones.
Despite the tensions, Trump expressed optimism and declared that the conflict was effectively over. Iran’s leadership has neither confirmed nor denied an agreement. Iranian state media also reported on a possible draft but left open whether Tehran would agree.
EuroPulse reported on June 12, 2026, about Trump’s nomination of Jay Clayton as the new intelligence coordinator (https://europulse.today/trump-nominiert-jay-clayton-geheimdienstkoordinator/).
