Trump made his remarks on his platform Truth Social, providing no further details on the reasons for his rejection. The Iranian proposal was a response to a US initiative that called for an end to hostilities before contentious issues like Iran's nuclear program could be negotiated.
According to the Iranian agency Tasnim, Tehran demands an immediate end to the war on all fronts, particularly in Lebanon, as well as a halt to the US naval blockade and guarantees against further attacks. Additionally, Iran is calling for the lifting of sanctions, including the US embargo on Iranian oil sales.
A report from the Wall Street Journal indicated that the Iranian leadership offered to dilute a portion of its highly enriched uranium and transfer the remainder to a third country. Pakistan, which is mediating in the conflict, had relayed Iran's response to the US.
Despite the diplomatic stalemate, there was a slight easing of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. The tanker Al Kharaitiyat, operated by QatarEnergy, safely passed through the route towards Pakistan. It was the first Qatari ship carrying liquefied natural gas to traverse the strait since the US and Israel began the war on February 28.
