During a meeting in the Oval Office in Washington, US Donald Trump praised NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte as a ‘great leader’. Trump emphasized that Rutte is a friend and that everyone respects him. ‘I think if anyone else were in this position, we wouldn’t be meeting today, to be honest, because we’ve been let down,’ Trump said.
Trump also expressed disappointment with several European countries, including Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. He described the situation in Spain as a ‘horror show’. Rutte, known for his good relationship with Trump, tried to smooth things over as much as possible — less than two weeks before the NATO summit in the Turkish capital Ankara.
The US administration has announced it will reassess relations with NATO in light of criticism of the allies. Trump and his administration have repeatedly criticized the lack of support from allies for the US war against Iran.
