Russia’s TASS news agency reported that US Donald Trump told Russian President Vladimir Putin in a phone call on Sunday that ending Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine is critical and he is prepared to help. Trump also informed Putin that the US is nearing a peace deal with Iran, while the US-Israel war against Iran continues.
The roughly hour-long call between Trump and Putin was “friendly and frank,” said Putin adviser Yuri Ushakov. Putin also informally congratulated Trump on his 80th birthday on June 14. The Kremlin website stated that Putin appreciates the mutual understanding that allows even complex issues to be discussed openly. He is convinced that together they can give Russian-American relations a new quality.
Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine has been ongoing since February 2022 and has now lasted longer than World War I. Peace negotiations remain largely stalled. However, Trump representatives recently stated at the G7 summit that they want to end the war “as quickly as possible.”
