US Donald Trump said Spain ‘fully capitulated’ and showed ‘great generosity.’ He had previously threatened to break off trade relations. Trump did not specify whom he spoke with but stressed: ‘I told him I will end trade relations. They gave in.’
The Spanish government reacted calmly. A government representative described relations with the US as ‘excellent’ and pointed to the US’s positive trade balance with Spain. According to media reports, the US administration is preparing a list of Spanish goods that could be subject to an embargo.
The dispute escalated after Spain refused the US use of its military bases for attacks on Iran. Trump had accused Madrid of spending too little on NATO and abandoning the US in the Iran conflict.
