At the start of the spring conference of interior ministers (IMK) in Hamburg, TGD federal chairman Gökay Sofuoglu criticized the lack of attention to right-wing violence. “I miss politicians who worry about the safety of people with a migration background in Germany,” Sofuoglu told the Tagesspiegel. He called for an integration policy that strengthens a sense of belonging.
Sofuoglu pointed to the upcoming state elections in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where polls suggest the AfD could gain votes. “Especially at a time when right-wing violence is increasing sharply and a far-right party could take on government responsibility for the first time, I am very worried about our safety in Germany, particularly in eastern Germany,” the TGD leader said.
The German Police Union (DPolG), meanwhile, is calling for the age of criminal responsibility to be lowered from 14 to 12. Federal Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) rejects this: children do not belong in prison, and criminal law is not a panacea. The IMK plans to discuss issues including violent crime among children, protection of critical infrastructure, and fines for traffic violations.
