Mayor Dominik Krause (Greens) was among the first to walk through the freshly created gap, calling it a “masterpiece” by the construction workers. The breakthrough connects Laim station with the future Baumschule Laim stop. This section is expected to open in 2031.
According to city building official Jeanne-Marie Ehbauer, work is four months ahead of schedule after previous delays of about twelve months. Groundwater treatment and the installation of siphons had complicated construction. With the breakthrough, above-ground work is also nearing completion—Gotthardstraße is being redesigned, giving cyclists more space.
Further west, preparations for the next construction phase are underway: in 2029, a tunnel boring machine is set to advance from Baumschule to Pasing, seven meters per day in 24-hour operation.
