France has extended its red heat warning to 72 of the 96 departments on the mainland – three-quarters of the country. Another 17 areas are on the second-highest orange alert. The temperatures are “exceptionally high, both during the day and at night,” Météo-France said.

In Belgium, the second-highest orange heat warning applies to most of the country. Meteorologist David Dehenauw reported a new temperature record for June 24: 33.2 degrees were measured at the national weather center in Uccle, south of Brussels, compared to 32.8 degrees on the same day in the hot summer of 1976. Authorities recommend drinking regularly, staying in cool rooms during the day, and looking out for vulnerable people.
