As Ukrinform reports, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has carried out an attack in Crimea, hitting three ships, a MiG-31 fighter jet and several air defense systems. The operation is part of Ukraine's ongoing efforts to weaken Russia's military infrastructure on the occupied peninsula.
According to Ukrinform, it was a combined attack using various weapon systems. The exact details of the means used and the timing of the attack were not specified. The SBU emphasized that the operation was carried out precisely and targeted to impair Russian capabilities in the region.
Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014, serves as an important base for the Russian Black Sea Fleet and a hub for air strikes on Ukraine. In recent months, Ukraine has repeatedly carried out attacks on military targets on the peninsula, including air defense systems, ships and airfields.
The attack on the MiG-31, a supersonic interceptor known for its use of Kh-47M2 Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, could aim to reduce Russia's ability to conduct such strikes. The destruction of air defense systems is also intended to increase the effectiveness of the Ukrainian Air Force in the region.
According to Ukrinform, the SBU has described the operation as successful. The Russian side has not yet officially commented on the incident. Independent confirmation of the reports is not available.
Ukraine has intensified its attacks on Crimea in recent weeks to disrupt Russian logistics and military presence. Observers see this as part of a strategy aimed at making Crimea unattractive as an operational base for Russian forces.
The attack comes amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022. Crimea remains a central point of contention between the two countries, and Ukraine has repeatedly stated its intention to recapture the peninsula.
