The United Nations (UN) has added Israel and Russia to its blacklist for sexual violence in armed conflicts. The move followed a review of allegations against the security forces of both countries, as reported by the Guardian. The UN accuses them of, among other things, raping male detainees.
According to the UN report, sexual abuse of 31 Palestinian men, women, and children from the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank between 2023 and 2025 was confirmed. The Israeli attacks reportedly included repeated gang rapes and the use of sexual violence as a method of torture. The specific allegations against Russia were not detailed in the report, but the inclusion on the list was due to similar offenses.
The UN blacklist for sexual violence in conflicts is updated annually and is intended to pressure the listed countries to hold perpetrators accountable. Israel has already announced it will review its cooperation with UN Secretary-General António Guterres over its inclusion on the list. Russia rejected the allegations.
