Speaking at a special session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Türk said the signs from the besieged city were unmistakable. ‘A further human rights catastrophe is unfolding in Sudan,’ the High Commissioner said. He called on the international community to stop the bloodshed between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

‘This is not a drill. This is a red alert that must land on the desks of heads of state and government worldwide,’ Türk said. The civilian population in Al-Obeid has been suffering under siege for 18 months and is threatened by fighting over control of the region as well as drone attacks.
