A heat warning is in effect for large parts of northern Germany. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the warning covers all of Lower Saxony, Hamburg, Bremen, southern Schleswig-Holstein, and southwestern Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In the Lower Saxony districts of Hameln-Pyrmont, Holzminden, Northeim, and Göttingen, an extreme heat warning has even been issued for Friday. The heatwave is expected to last at least through Sunday.
On Thursday, temperatures of up to 34 degrees are expected in Lower Saxony, and up to 32 degrees in Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. On Friday, up to 38 degrees are possible inland, and on Saturday, up to 38 degrees across all northern German states. Weather expert Frank Böttcher told NDR television that this is “the strongest heatwave we have ever had in June. It has never been this hot this early – and over such a long period.”
In Hamburg, some elementary schools have canceled sports festivals. Hannover Airport is watering the runways to prevent asphalt damage. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Social Affairs Stefanie Drese (SPD) appealed to the public to look after elderly and sick people and to drink enough water.
