82 years after the Allied landings to liberate Western Europe from Nazi rule, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth used the commemoration ceremony in Normandy for a political sideswipe. In his speech, he sharply attacked European migration policy and spoke of an ‘invasion’ by migrants.
Hegseth’s choice of words caused a stir, as he used the term ‘invasion’ in a historically highly sensitive context. The speech took place on the anniversary of the D-Day landings, when Allied troops initiated the liberation of Europe from National Socialism in 1944.
