The US Southern Command said on X that the vessel’s crew was traveling on drug smuggling routes. “Three male narco-terrorists were killed in this operation,” the post stated. No US forces were harmed.
On Friday, the US military attacked a similar boat, also killing three people. The total death toll from such operations since last year has now surpassed 200. The two latest strikes were part of four such operations within a week.
The Trump administration has declared that the US is in an armed conflict with Latin American drug cartels. However, the White House has not provided conclusive evidence that the boats were actually smuggling drugs. Human rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have called the attacks “unlawful extrajudicial killings.”
