Ahead of the NATO summit on Tuesday and Wednesday in Turkey, the unnamed official said the US still believes that taking over the island, which belongs to Denmark, is the best way to meet NATO’s defense needs regarding Greenland. At the same time, he acknowledged that other options are being considered but left open what they might look like.
The official pointed to “lively naval activity” in the region and stressed that US Donald Trump is seeking a “permanent” solution. Trump had openly threatened to take over Greenland earlier this year, snubbing NATO ally Denmark. He justified this by the need to protect the island from Russia and China.
